1973:A new view of Maidenhead opened up as work continued on the demolition of the Star public house and the old Nicholson’s brewery bottling shed off South Street.

The works provided a new angle of the police station buildings, which would also soon be coming down when the new courthouse and police station were built off Holmanleaze.


1973:Princess Alexandra landed by helicopter in Berries Road, Cookham, to open Cookham House, the Civil Service Benevolent Fund’s new home for the elderly overlooking the Thames.

1988:Robert Brown – who played ‘M’ in the James Bond films alongside Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton – was the perfect choice to make a presentation at the farewell party for Percy Garrett, landlord of The Chequers in Cookham Dean.

Robert had been a regular at The Chequers for 31 of the 41 years Percy – known as the Colonel – had been at the pub.


1993:The curtain rose on the final scene of the Royal Borough’s multi-million pound Magnet Leisure Centre development with a charity concert attended by the Duke of Edinburgh.

1998:Fifty women from Maidenhead gathered at Braywick park to complete a landmark three-mile run.

The run was the result of eight weeks’ hard work training with the Maidenhead Running Sisters.

The club was set up to encourage women who want to exercise and get fit to join its ranks, with the aim of being capable of running three miles within eight weeks.


1998:Early misgivings about the weather were blown away as the sun came out for Thames Valley Adventure Playground’s raft race, with raised £4,350 for the charity.

The 10th annual raft race saw 40 teams from companies and clubs across Berkshire battle it out on the waters of Summerleaze Lake. The fun also included an assault course and tug-of-war.

Hawaii 6-0 won the raft race, Carole’s Own Full Monty took first prize for the assault course, and the Rugby Thugs were victorious in the tug-of-war.
