After a two-year break the Wargrave & Shiplake Regatta is back.
The popular family event makes a welcome return on August 5 and 6 for its 155th year.
A total of 350 crews will compete in a series of 29 events, totalling 400 races.
The course stretches 400 yards between the two villages with teams having trained for weeks to compete in canoes, skiffs and punts. Serious competitors enter in categories: boys, girls, ladies, gentlemen, mixed and veterans.
For fun and for those wanting to ‘have a go,’ a ‘scratch dongola’ event is offered.
This is where crews of six ‘kneel’ and ‘punt’ over a shorter course. These events can be entered for enjoyment on the day in categories according to age and experience.
There is also a Regatta Swim on the Saturday which welcomes all standards of swimmers, with a 1km and 2km race in both male and female categories, a junior race, and a 400m ‘go with the flow’ event.
There are prizes up for grabs and as an added bonus, a random junior competitor will win a free swim lesson with Sophie Whitworth – a Tri and swim coach based at Athlete Services Henley.
Entries for the swim close on Tuesday, August 2.
Spectators are encouraged to go along and enjoy the day and cheer from the banks.
There will be a beer tent, food stands, an ice cream van and activities for children.
Tickets can be bought for the Friday or the Saturday or for both days, with car parking available and a ferry ride provided to get people across the river.
Regatta Chairman, Carlton Barnard, has high hopes for the event.
He said: “This is our first year running post COVID so more than anything we’re looking forward to welcoming competitors and spectators back to the riverbank.
"Entries have closed to the main races but we run a ‘have a go’ event called the Scratch Dongola - a bit like dragon boating - which can be entered by anyone on the Saturday morning, and we’re excited to put the crews together for this as it allows complete beginners the opportunity to take part in this historic event."
Wargrave & Shiplake Regatta takes place in Lower Shiplake, at the end of Mill Lane, in a field by the river.
There’s plenty of parking and it’s only a short walk from Shiplake Station, accessible on foot or by bike, and an easy buggy walk.
