Wycombe boss Gary Waddock praised his players for giving Preston a 'huge scare' in a 4-3 defeat at Adams Park on Tuesday night.
Waddock and his players left the field to rousing applause from home supporters despite not picking up a point for their spirited display.
Promotion contenders Preston fought back from behind to claim a thrilling victory with the former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor scoring a brace.
Mellor put Preston ahead with a close-range finish and then set up Iain Hume, who drilled home a second.
But Wycombe fought back as Gareth Ainsworth tapped in to make it 2-1 and Scott Donnelly levelled from the penalty spot after Kadeen Harris was fouled.
Stuart Beavon headed in Donnelly's corner to put Wycombe in front and the hosts missed further chances before Hume equalised with a composed finish and Mellor steered home a dramatic winner.
*The Chairboys face a trip to Rochdale on Saturday (October 1) who sit one place below them in League One.
