We must stay focused says Slough Town boss

Slough Town FC boss Steve Bateman says his side must be professional as they look to secure the Southern Central Division title.

The Rebels currently sit level with St Neots at the top of the table with three games remaining but the club has been plunged into mourning this week with the sudden death of loyal fan Chris Sliski.

Bateman, who was a close friend of Sliski, says it is a tough time for everyone connected with the club but they must stay focused on promotion.

He said: “We’ve got to try and be professional and do what Chris would have wanted us to do.

“And that would be to play hard and win.”

The Rebels played Beaconsfield Sycob on Monday afternoon just hours after the news of Sliski’s death broke.

Having gone behind they fought back to earn a 1-1 draw which moved them level on points with St Neots who lost at Biggleswade.

St Neots have now picked up just two points from a possible nine and have failed to win twice against sides who have had men sent off during that period.

Bateman admits their results have been surprising.

He said:?“In their last few games they were beaten at home against 10 men, drawn at home against nine men and drawn against a side who have already been relegated.

“They are not the results you would expect but that’s what happens at this stage of the season.

“I’m sure there are still more twists and turns ahead.”

The Rebels boss added:?“What we need to do is make sure we take care of our own results.

“We have to make sure we can take advantage of any more slip ups.

“I would love to go into the final day with it in our hands.

“What I don’t want to be doing is going into it having let St Neots get a three point lead because that would finish it.”

Slough face a difficult task tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel to third placed Bedworth United.

Bateman knows they are dangerous opponents but he insists his side will go there and be positive.

“Bedworth is a tough place to go,” he said. “They are a good team and have been up at the top for most of the season.

“But we have to go there and be positive and look to win the game.”
