Marlow’s Tyrrell Hatton was one of only three players to go unbeaten at the Marco Simone Golf Course in Rome as Europe won back the Ryder Cup from the USA this weekend.

The Europeans were embarrassed by the Americans at Whistling Straights in Wisconsin two years ago, losing 19-9 on US soil, however, on this occasion they had the upper hand from the very first tee-shot and eventually ran out 16.5-11.5 winners in Rome.

At the very heart of their resounding win was Marlow’s finest Hatton, who won three of his four matches and tied the other across the four days.

The Harleyford Golf Club member helped get Europe off to the perfect start as he partnered Jon Rahm to a 4&3 win (four holes up with three left to play) over the American duo of Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns. If the crowds at Marco Simone were celebrating after match one, they were jubilant after match four with the Europeans clutching a 4-0 lead. They never seriously looked like throwing that lead away, even accounting for a few nervy displays on Saturday afternoon four-balls and Sunday Singles.

下一个与可爱的挪威合作,Viktor Hovland, Hatton kept Europe on course for the cup as the pair tied their Friday afternoon four-ball match with America’s A team, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. It helped build a five-point lead for Luke Donald’s team heading into the weekend.

A strong start in the Saturday morning foursomes saw the Europeans place on hand on the Ryder Cup. Victories for Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood (2&1 over Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth) and Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg (who crushed Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka 9&7) were backed up Hatton and Jon Ryan’s 2&1 victory over Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele), with the Europeans winning on 16 and 17, having been one down coming off the 15th green.

Trailing by seven (9.5-2.5 down) heading into the Saturday afternoon four-balls, USA finally showed some of what they were capable of, winning three of the four matchups, however Justin Rose and Bob Macintyre’s gutsy 3&2 victory put Europe five shots to the good heading into the Sunday singles.

Momentum swung one way and then another as the Europeans won two and lost two of the opening five match ups, but Hatton’s 3&2 victory over Brian Harman put the Europeans on the precipice of victory, and when Ricky Fowler conceded the 16th hole to Tommy Fleetwood the contest was finally put to bed. Fellow Europeans Jon Rahm and Bob Macintyre were the other players to go through the event unbeaten.

Afterwards, Hatton told Reuters: “Obviously, I lost my last two singles in previous Ryder Cups. Yeah, I really wanted to win the point today. That felt amazing, and you saw my reaction there when the match finished."

He later tweeted: “Wow what a week & what a TEAM!

“Thank you to the fans, what an atmosphere you created for us to play in!

“So happy to help bring the Ryder Cup back Rome.”

The USA will have home advantage in the next Ryder Cup, due to take place at Bethpage Black on Long Island, New York State in September 2025.
