A308 speed limit to be reduced following Cabinet decision

Councillors have approved a lowering of the speed limit along a section of the A308 between Monkey Island Lane and the M4 motorway bridge.

Residents and members of Bray Parish Council had asked for the limit to be changed from the current 40mph limit to 30mph.

The move went against a recommendation from council officers and a formal objection by Thames Valley Police.

Police had warned the move could ‘unduly criminalise’ a lot of people and said there was an exisiting high level of compliance with the current limit.

Members of Windsor and Maidenhead council’s cabinet met on Wednesday to rubberstamp the decision.

奥德菲尔德议员,杰夫•希尔(区第一ependents) told the meeting that statistics pointed to an injury on the road every three to four months and that ‘sooner or later’ another accident could prove to be fatal.

Cllr Hill added: “This road has become progressively more urbanised. It’s not the road it was when the speed limit was first set.”

Cabinet went on to unanimously approve the move.

Chairman of the Holyport Resident’s Association, Andrew Cormie, spoke on behalf of the proposals at two meetings.

After the decision he told the Advertiser: “I welcome the decision by cabinet to change the speed limit on the A308 Windsor Road to 30 mph.

“This repeats a cabinet decision on February 4, 2021 to change the limit to 30 mph, which was later reversed due to the wrong comments of highways technicians and police. I sincerely hope that such action will not be repeated.”
