Maidenhead Rugby Club sent four girls age group teams to the Girls’ Festival of Rugby at RAF Halton near Aylesbury on Sunday, one of the largest girls’ rugby events of its kind in the country.

女佣增长和扩大他们的女人的s and girls’ rugby provision and this was the first time the club has been able to send four teams to an event of this nature.

The event saw around 1,400 girls taking part for various teams in a 10-a-side format and it was the first time since the girls’ section was established at Braywick that the club has been able to send such a strong representation. Playing teams from far and wide should further enhance the girls’ skills, development and confidence for future matches and competitions.

Maids’ u12s side played some fantastic rugby as they won one and lost two of their pool matches before bowing out to Welwyn in the knock-out rounds. There were standout performances from Lacey, Bea and Harriet who was named ‘teammate of the day’ for her tackling and all-round sporting behaviour.

The u14s team narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter finals after winning two of their matches and drawing the other. The highlight of the day was their defeat of Trojans, an established team who’ve historically proved a difficult opponent for Maidenhead. There was, though, some unfortunate news for Zofia, who suffered a knee injury whilst playing and her teammates wish her a speedy recovery.

The u16s team were playing their first competitive rugby of the season, with many of the players having come up from the u14s team last year. Three of their girls, Poppy, Issy and Zuzanna were playing their first competitive games of rugby ever. The team played with fantastic energy and spirit, and it was great to see them kick off their season in such a positive manner.

All the u16s matches were against strong opposition but their displays improved with every game.

The highlight was captain Lois scoring two tries in the final game, a close defeat to Melkham (Melton Mowbray and Oakham girls), which also included some brilliant team tries and stoic defence. The team showed plenty of promise for the remainder of the season and played an exciting brand of running rugby.

The u18s team – a combined team with Reading this season – showed they’re starting to gel as a squad after a couple of tough league games in the early phase of the season. Sunday’s matches will have given them more important time together on the field, and the highlight came when Emily intercepted a pass and raced away to score. It was top class in its timing and execution. The season is still in its early days for these Maids teams so if any local girls would like to try rugby, please contact maidenheadgirlsrugby@gmail.com or check out www.maidenheadrfc.com/girls for more information.
