Exhibition on 20th century coronations at Maidenhead Heritage Centre

An exhibition featuring memorabilia from coronations across the 20th century is open at Maidenhead Heritage Centre.

The display features documents, photographs and souvenirs from the four Royal celebrations.

Rare mementos from the coronation that never happened, that of King Edward VIII in 1937, are also included in the exhibition.

Richard Poad, Maidenhead Heritage Centre trustee, said: “One of the most interesting things among the coronation mugs and coronation plates from George V onwards are the two mugs from the coronation that never happened, Edward VIII, which was scheduled for May 1937.

“The souvenirs must have all been running off the production line before he abdicated in 1936 and they became instantly redundant.

“I think it’s amazing that any have survived.”

The exhibition has been made possible thanks to heritage centre members and Advertiser readers who have loaned their treasured artefacts to the Park Street venue.

Young visitors can also get the opportunity to get a taste of royalty by sitting on a throne at the centre.

The display will be running until Saturday, May 13.
