The 20-week project to restore the historic Cookham Bridge got underway on Monday.

Essential maintenance works on the 156-year-old bridge were required and will be carried out through the winter months.

The refurbishment project will help extend the life of the Grade II listed structure and includes bearing replacement, re-waterproofing, resurfacing and joint replacement.

Lib Dem councillor Mandy Brar (Bisham and Cookham) said: “Everybody was consulted – there were 3,000 letters that went out to residents and businesses and we had two open days to ask questions to officers. We have been talking about things for the last year and putting everything in place.

“Nobody is satisfied, obviously the businesses are going to suffer the most, especially in the High Street. As a business owner myself, I know what it’s like.

“It’s going to be hard but we did ask the borough if they can work with businesses which they have done.”

She said businesses in the area who are unhappy can get in touch with her.

The diversion route follows the A4094 south from Cookham, west along the A4 Bath Road, north on the A404, and then along the A4155 Marlow Road, with this route in reverse for traffic on the northern side of the bridge.

Train services will run as usual from Cookham to Maidenhead, Furze Platt and Bourne End, but buses will not serve Cookham and Cookham Rise.
