'No smoke and mirrors' intended on Winter Hill licence confusion

Get Golfing – the charity that has newly taken over Winter Hill Golf Club in Cookham – has clarified its position over a new licencing application following some confusion.

Two weeks ago, Cookham societies raised concerns overplans that would likely make the club notably busier,
increasing noise levels.

Although Get Golfing announced it was withdrawing this application on October 6, the council had not yet been contacted with a formal request.

It remained on the agenda of the licencing sub committee, which was due to sit on Friday (October 20), causing consternation among the Cookham public.

That meeting has now been cancelled and the Royal Borough has confirmed that the application was withdrawn the week before last.

Jack Coleman, Get Golfing group clubhouse director, clarified that there was a slight delay with the solicitors at the time of the announcement.

“Clarity is very important in these situations – and you have my word that it was in the process of being withdrawn and it has been withdrawn,” he said. “There was no smoke and mirrors on our part.

“We’re a charity with 12 sites and we wouldn’t be in a position to do anything that was deemed as being wrong.

“We’re very keen to engage with the local community. We do a lot of good work and we’re not looking to create any enemies – quite the contrary, we want to build something very positive.”
